If you’re looking for an eco-friendly retreat, Canada will spoil you for options.
With so much wilderness Canadians can build resorts far from the busy city life where you can get back to nature in a sustainable way.
Four Canada Resorts That Offer An Eco Vacation
They focus on preserving the wilderness while allowing guests to experience it. Here are just some of the amazing eco-hotels in Canada.
Eco Retreat at Kw'o:kw'e:hala – Hope, British Columbia
90 minutes away from Vancouver in Hope is a unique wilderness B&B with organic gardens near the Othello Tunnels. This place is the Eco Retreat at Kw'o:kw'e:hala with wood-fired hot tubs, healthy breakfasts, and unique cabins.
Their philosophy revolves around going back to the basics and living lightly. They offer bicycles for guests and swimming in local lakes and rivers. Kw'o:kw'e:hala use a state of the art septic field that allowed them to leave the land undisturbed.
Guests are also invited to have a quick “pee in the bushes” should they so desire.
Forest House – La Ronge, Saskatchewan
It took over 30 years for Forest House to become the eco-friendly reality that it is today.
The original builders chose the location, not only for its outstanding beauty but also because it would have minimal impact on it's surrounding Boreal Forest. The lumber that built the hotel was locally sourced, they get their power thanks to solar banks, and every decision was made to preserve the natural beauty of the area.
They have a self-composting septic system as well as a self-sustaining garden. Getting to Forest House can be a bit of a challenge however as it is a 6-hour drive from Saskatoon.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort – Tofino, British Columbia
Few things excite travelers more than seeing the UNESCO name used to describe something, which is why the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in the UNESCO Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve is so exciting.
It sits at the end of an 11-kilometer long boat ride through the biosphere and has the mandate to rehabilitate the damage done by mining, logging, and commercial fishing. The resort employs Ahousaht, local First Nation men, and women dedicated to sustainable eco-tourism.
A 10,000 bio-wheel waste treatment facility manages all of their liquid and solid waste creating potable water and fertilizer.
At Clayoquot Wilderness Resort you stay in gorgeous tents lit by oil lamps and candles. Guests receive all natural shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Getting there is easiest done by seaplane and are part of your resort package when you book.
Trout Point Lodge – East Kemptville, Nova Scotia
Trout Point Lodge in East Kemptville, Nova Scotia has been awarded a 5 Green Key rating from the Gren Key Global program and has appeared on many lists of Canada’s top eco-resorts.
The lodge has no built-in air conditioning, instead relying on ceiling fans and cross-ventilation to cool, though portable air conditioning units are available upon request. They have their large-capacity waste treatment facility and use gray water in their gardens.
During construction, they used only 100% natural materials, including wool carpeting. They’ve done away with the traditional small, single-use containers for amenities, instead offering bulk dispensers. They also encourage guests to have a low-impact on the local environment and leave no trace.
Trout Point Lodge continue their sustainable operation in the kitchen where they use fair trade and locally sourced, organic foods.
You may have to travel a bit to get to any of the eco friendly Canada resorts, but the trip is well worth it for an amazing eco vacation.
They’re all set in beautiful locations, far from the fast life of the city. Much of their focus is on the land and how the guests interact with it, a bit of a change from American style eco-hotels.
