I Have A New Skin Care Obsession

collagen in skin care

This is the first year, I’ve really noticed a change. I’m not afraid or ashamed of the forehead wrinkles or the lines around my eyes. And although I can still go 6 months between touch ups, I notice more streaks of gray when I pull my hair back in a ponytail.

I’m not scared of aging, I feel blessed to have every day I have. My mom’s early death from breast cancer made me uber aware that time is precious. And while I once thought, 20 years was a long time, when I look back, it can feel like a year took only a few minutes.

But I’m currently obsessed with the latest addition to my skincare routine, Collagen Elastin Plus. Our skin is mainly made of collagen, a protein, and we lose some of it as we age. This Pure + Simple water-based serum is made with marine-based collagen that can be absorbed into the skin and may help replenish it by bonding to the natural water molecules in the skin. This plumps up hydration levels, evens out skin tone and pushes wrinkles outward. Good skin hydration is key!

Why Collagen?

Beyond choosing to add collagen to your skincare, how else can you add more collagen to your life? I asked  our contributor, Dr. Jenny Henderson, N.D., “Since collagen is a protein, ensuring adequate protein intake in the diet from a variety of sources will provide your skin with the building block amino acids to make collagen, and Vitamin C is critical for collagen formation.” She also cautioned us, “Cortisol breaks down cortisol, so stress reduction is important for maintaining good amounts of collagen.”

When To Apply Collagen

The order in which you apply your skin care products has a big impact on how effectively they work. I change up my routine seasonally, but I always use a serum. Serum’s contain active ingredients, like collagen (!!) to treat your skin’s concern. Here’s a moisturizing routine, using Pure + Simple’s products that maximize hydration for maturing skin:

  1. Wash face with a gentle cleanser, like Pure + Simple’s Gentle Cleansing Milk, which also contains marine collagen. It can be used twice daily and easily removes makeup.
  2. While skin is still damp, apply the Collagen Elastin Plus.
  3. Next, apply a moisturizer, Pure + Simple’s Beautiful Skin Face Cream, to seal in the serum. This cream includes Vitamin C, another ingredient that supports collagen production.
  4. Lastly, apply a few drops of Pure Skin Face Oil to help protect moisture from leaving your skin. This skin care step is especially important in the fall and winter when we go between the warmth inside to outdoors.

The easiest way to remember how to layer facial products is to think about moving from lightest to heaviest! So, what do you think? Will you try adding collagen to your skin care routine, too?!
