After deodorant, giving up your favourite shampoo and condition for a natural brand feels like a challenge. It’s our hair after all and we want it to look good. I’ve long struggled to find natural hair care that I could commit too but when LOVEFRESH’s shampoos and conditioners came onto the green beauty scene, I trusted that I’d found my match. Their Rosemary and Spearmint scents have graced my bathtub ever since.
My scalp is often itchy in the winter, and oh-so-sensitive year-round, so I really appreciate the combination of Nettle, Calendula, and the other calming ingredients. After hearing me go on and on about the lovely cooling sensation, my husband put down his bottle of conventional shampoo for good to start using LOVEFRESH’s shampoo, too.
Stacey Davis, the founder of LOVEFRESH, started out making green beauty products in her kitchen. These homemade experiments evolved into the LOVEFRESH line. Stacey knows how to create amazing make-it-yourself beauty recipes and she’s shared some homemade ones straight from her kitchen with us. They can be used to address common hair care concerns and compliment the products in your daily beauty routine.
A Hair Mask for Dull Hair
Avocados are good for our health so it’s not really surprising that they are also great for our hair. If your hair is looking a little lackluster, then I suggest you book yourself some time and make this recipe straight away. Get ready for next-level silkiness.
Avocado Hair Mask
- 1 ripe avocado
- 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt
- 1 TBSP honey
Combine ingredients and blend in food processor or blender until smooth. Apply to damp hair and cover with a shower cap or plastic. Let sit for 1 hour before rinsing thoroughly. Follow up with LOVEFRESH’s all natural shampoo.
A Quick & Natural Fix for Heat-Styled Hair
Do you often heat style your hair? Stacey shared an amazingly easy beauty tip to help hydrate that involves beer!
Stacey says, “We know it sounds a little crazy (and maybe like a waste of a good drink) but you’ll be amazed at the results! The alcohol acts as a cleansing agent while the barley and hops moisturize! Beer is surprisingly rich in nutrients and B vitamins, which are hard to find in traditional hair products.”
Beer Rinse Recipe
- One bottle of organic beer
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Optional: Add your favourite essential oil (e.g., Lavender or Tea Tree)
In the shower, apply about the bottle of beer from root to tip. Let it sit for 3-4 minutes then wash it out with cold water and follow up with a rinse using apple cider vinegar (feel free to add in a few drops of your favourite essential oil). Rinse again! This DIY beer rinse recipe will help rid your hair of built-up residue and leave it ultra shiny.
So, are you ready to transition to natural hair care?
Unlike many other natural hair care products that I’ve tried, LOVEFRESH’s SLES/SLS-free formula doesn’t weigh my hair down and leaves it shiny and easy to brush. Sometimes your hair can act up when beginning to use a natural shampoo and Stacey explained that although this is not the case for most people, “Others seem to have some troubles as they may be “shedding” all of the unwanted toxins that have built up over the years… good ‘ole vinegar is your best bet.”
This Toronto-made beauty brand is now two for two in my world, I am devoted to their natural deodorant. They’ve created luxurious products that actually work for the two items that have many of us loathe to give up our long-time conventional brands; deodorant and shampoo.

I have been using LOVEFRESH since discovering their baking soda free deodorant at the One of a Kind Show in Toronto several years ago.
