Meet Dr. Jen Newell, A Radiant Skin ND

March is here and the days are longer. It’s the time of year where we usually awaken from our semi-hibernation state and start thinking about spring cleaning. This month on Green Moms Collective, we’ll go beyond cleaning our homes and look at spring cleaning our lives while we explore detoxes and cleanses of all kinds including our beauty routine, our addiction to technology, and habits that get in the way of our wellness.

To help us detox our beauty routines and achieve a gorgeous glow, we’ve invited Dr. Jen Newell, ND to be our monthly guest expert. I first noticed Jen on Instagram when I saw we have the same affinity for green beauty products and then soon discovered she was a natural skin doctor -a naturopathic doctor and radiant skin coach who helps women take control of their health to achieve confidence and glowing skin.

Coffee, Tea, Water, or Green Smoothie?

How do you start your day? People assume that because I am a Naturopath and health advocate that I must start my day with a green smoothie or juice but I love a great coffee to get my day going.

I try to be conscious about the quality of the beans. I brew organic, fair trade, shade grown beans at home and don’t use a single cup brewer that uses pods because of the waste they create. I also try to drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning to rehydrate.

Tell us what makes you weird/awesome. Tell us something your readers don’t already know about you.

I don’t know if there is much about me that I don’t put out into the world. I share a lot of my quirks on social media like my love of glitter and sparkle and my enthusiasm for green beauty, mermaids, arts and crafts, DIYs and my dog, Edison.

One thing that I take great pride in is that I have masterfully integrated clean and green beauty/personal care products into my fiancé’s routine. I have gradually transitioned him to more natural products and subtly educated him about what he should be looking to avoid and use and pat myself on the back when I notice him implementing that information or sharing it with others.

Tell us about yourself.

As a Naturopathic Doctor and Radiant Skin Coach, I help women overcome acne to achieve clear, confident and glowing skin. But what I’m most passionate about is supporting women to reclaim their inner glow and to live a confident and radiant life.

I also regularly work with women to address digestive concerns as well as hormonal imbalances that impact their lives.


What is something women can start doing immediately to have better skin?

Drink more water! It is amazing how much dehydration impacts the health and appearance of your skin. Being even slightly dehydrated makes fine lines and wrinkles more visible and makes your complexion appear dull and lifeless.

This is such a simple strategy for glowing youthful skin but has a huge impact. So drink up, ladies!

What do you wish women would stop doing to their skin? What gets in the way of us having the best natural glow?

There are a few things that sabotage the skin that most women do on a regular basis. I encourage all my skin therapy patients to get rid of their magnifying mirrors – getting that exaggerated view of the skin inevitably leads to picking at small blemishes or obsessing about tiny flaws that aren’t typically noticeable.

Speaking about picking at the skin, this is a definite “no-no” if you want healthy, radiant skin. As soon you start to pop, dig or touch blemishes, you run the risk of an infection, scarring and lingering hyperpigmentation (dark marks on the skin).

We are our own worst enemies when it comes to the health and appearance of our skin – we need to show our skin some love and respect.

Do you have a favourite green/clean beauty product?

This is such a hard question because I am a product junkie and love trying new things and also testing things about before recommending them to clients and patients.

I love using local products as much as possible and have a few holy grail favourites that work particularly well for my skin (these items may not be ideal for everyone): Graydon Clinical Luxury Face Food Mineral Mist, FitGlow Beauty The Good Gloss, Province Apothecary Moisturizing Cleanser + Make Up Remover, and WildCraft Geranium Orange Blossom Face Cream.

Tell us about your skin care routine.

I try to keep my skincare routine as simple as possible.

I cleanse in the morning when in the shower using either Dermaviduals Cleansing Milk or FitGlow Beauty Calm Cleansing Milk. I then moisturize with the WildCraft Geranium Orange Blossom Face Cream or a mixture of serums (depending on what my skin is doing) while my skin is still damp. I top this all off with a sunscreen like Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30. In the evening, I cleanse using an oil cleanser like the one from Province Apothecary and moisturize with deeper acting serums such as those from Odacité or Dermaviduals. Once or twice a week I include gentle exfoliating in my routine and once a week I will add in a masque.


What advice would you give someone who wants to make a difference in her skin starting today?

I would encourage you to consult with an expert to get a really targeted and individualized plan to address your specific concerns and goals.

Glowing skin begins within and is not just about what you apply topically to your skin so having guidance to address gut health, hormonal balance and diet can help you achieve radiant skin quickly and efficiently.

One thing you can begin immediately is to increase water intake and hydration.

How do you practice mindful living?

To practice mindful living, I try to infuse my life with fun and lightheartedness.

I surround myself with people of a similar mindset and organize self-care activities that support that goal. I also try to schedule in time to recharge during the week and make self-care a priority by planning time to do the things that make me feel whole – whether it’s time with friends, quite time for self-reflection or a simple manicure.

What’s currently on your nightstand?

A ton of hair ties and necklaces, a skin care handbook from Dermaviduals, Province Apothecary Sex Oil, and a Hurraw lip balm.

What is the one thing you always do to take care of yourself?

I am the kind of person that is really restored by water, so I always make sure I have time to relish my morning shower and ritual. I outfit my shower with luxurious natural body wash and The Body Deli Living Shampoo and Conditioner. My morning ritual really sets the tone for my day.

What is the most common reason women come to you about their skin?

Women come to me to improve their skin for a number of reasons but most often it is due to adult onset acne caused by hormonal imbalances.

These women are often frustrated because they have tried just about everything and are not seeing the results they want. In addition to acne, I also see a number of women who want a more natural approach to aging gracefully. They want recommendations that will enhance their beauty as they get older.
